The air conditioner unit sits outside, making it subject to outside elements. All these things can have an impact on the AC unit’s efficiency, and like any appliance, the air conditioner works better when it’s properly maintained. Fortunately, this is easy to do if you just follow a few simple steps.
First, Turn It Off
Before you do any maintenance on the air conditioner, make sure you shut it off. The AC works on electricity and has a lot of moving parts. Therefore, it’s much safer and easier to work with if the power is off.
Clean Out the Fan Cage
Remove the fan cage from the air conditioning unit. Then, pick out any leaves and clean off the dirt and debris.
Brush Debris Off the Condenser Fins
Take the outside covers off the AC unit and use a brush to remove the dirt from the narrow, metal slats called condenser fins. Remove stubborn dirt with a butter knife. Then, rinse the fins off with a garden hose.
Straighten Bent Fins
The condenser fins can bend easily from too much dirt, outside elements, heavy rain, or pressure washing. Use a butter knife to gently straighten them.
Clean the Area Around the AC Unit
Once you’ve cleaned the fan and fins, clean up around the AC. Pick up the leaves, twigs, and other debris, and sweep away the dirt.
Make Sure the AC Unit Is Level
The pad beneath the unit can become uneven over time as the soil settles underneath. Use a carpenter’s level to make sure the unit isn’t on a slant. If it is, use a shovel to dig out some of the dirt in front of the unit. Then lift the unit and put the shoveled dirt underneath to lift up the uneven side.
Wipe Off the Evaporator Coil
On the inside of the unit, you’ll find the door to the evaporator coil. With a soft brush, wipe away any dirt and then use a no-rinse coil spray or a spray bottle with dish detergent, distilled vinegar, and water to clean the coil.
Unclog the Evaporator Drain
The evaporator drain can get clogged with mold buildup and cause damage. Find the drain line near the unit, an outside wall, utility sink, or the basement. Then, clean the drain with a wet/dry vacuum.
