Is it time for you to select a new AC filter? Chances are it is, and you know how important it is to do it correctly, especially now that these muggy Alabama days are about to be upon us yet again. If you have gotten around to turning on your air conditioner and you can’t help but notice this all-too-familiar and nasty musty smell, then it’s time that you take advantage of these tips for choosing a new AC filter for your unit.
1. Determine the Correct Sizing for the Air Filter
Think of this first step as a means of “laying the foundation” for your AC unit each and every year. You will need to make sure that the replacement filter has the proper sizes, so check the numbers printed on the old filter. Of course, if you are new to the property, then you should measure the grill or the filter of the existing unit to find the dimensions. Basically, you want to look at the height (the measurement from top to bottom), the width (the measurement from side to side), and the depth (how thick the filter is).
2. Consider the MERV Ratings
Another important aspect of your AC filter is the MERV rating. MERV is an acronym for minimum efficiency reporting value, and the higher the value, the more effective the filtration of particles will be. In a nutshell, this will help both your airstream and your equipment. Your MERV will go from one to 20, and generally, the higher you go, the better off you go. However, AC filter values above 13 are reserved for commercial environments.
If your filter has a rating between one and four, this filter will work great for a window unit. If it has a rating between five and eight, it will be excellent for household filtration. Finally, a rating between nine and 13 would provide superior quality for the entire household.
3. Plan for Whether Your Filter Is Washable
If you have a disposable filter, it should be checked monthly during both the cooling and heating seasons. Yes, if you shop around, you can find a washable filter that is an eco-friendly solution that will only have to be replaced once a year.
